Sedation Services For Nervous Patients
Conscious Sedation
For patients who are nervous about having dental treatment, sedation (provided by Cate Howard BDS) is a great way to overcome this problem. It is a safe and effective way to help you relax and conquer anxiety. Whilst you are not asleep for your treatment, you feel relaxed and drowsy. You often have no recollection of having the treatment and time passes much more quickly.
At Dunluce Dental we offer intravenous sedation. Intravenous or 'IV' sedation is given by injection, normally in the arm or back of the hand. You will still be able to respond to verbal instructions your dentist gives. Local anaesthetic will still be used to make sure you can't feel anything or experience any pain. However this will be administered after you are sedated so you will not be aware of it.
Benefits of IV Sedation:
Fast-Acting Sedation
IV sedation provides relief from nervousness quickly, since the anti-anxiety medicine goes right to your bloodstream. This type of sedation works faster than oral sedation or inhaled sedation.
Easy Dosage Adjustment
The use of IV sedation makes it easy for your dentist to adjust the dosage as needed. If you need a stronger dosage, for example, your dentist can make this adjustment. Easily adjustable dosages help ensure that you receive the correct amount needed to relieve anxiety.
Little To No Recall
IV sedation produce an amnesia-like effect, so you won't remember much about your dental appointment. In some cases, patients don't remember any details about their appointment. This helps reduce any associated unpleasant feelings with dental visits, which may help lower your risk of dental anxiety for upcoming appointments.
No Dental Work Delays
If you have dental anxiety, you might be put off having dental work done out of fear. This can often lead to more serious dental problems developing over time if left untreated.
Risks of IV Sedation:
IV sedation is generally considered safe for the majority of patients and the risks are rare. Seeing a qualified dentist with plenty of sedation experience further reduces this. To minimise complications and before undergoing IV sedation, you will be required to have a sedation assessment. At this appointment we will take a full medical and social history which will help us determine if you are suitable. We will also guide you through the consent process.
Respiratory Problems
Respiratory distress may occur with IV sedation, such as those who have been too deeply sedated. Keep in mind this is rare. A good dentist will continually monitor for respiratory distress and other health issues during your procedure and while sedation is administered.
Longer Recovery
After your treatment with IV sedation the effects of the medicine take a little while to wear off. During this time, we will monitor you until we fell it is completely safe to drive. We will normally advise that you do not drive, drink alcohol or operate machinery 12 hours following IV sedation. You will need to be accompanied to each sedation session by an adult and be supervised afterwards until the effects completely wear off.
*The cost of sedation is £197.50 per session plus treatment, No cost for initial assessment.
